Hyogo-tsu has been known as an ideal natural seaport since old times. It served as the base for Japan-Sung (China) trade as Owada no Tomari (anchorage) in the era of Taira no Kiyomori, and even in recent times it prospered as a key junction of marine transport. Numerous historical sites can be found in the old historic quarters. Vigorous town development is promoted around Nagata.
